What is a Sleep Study?
- A Polysomnogram (PSG) is an overnight sleep study ordered by your physician to aid in determining if you have a sleep disorder. This study monitors and records physical activities during sleep in a non-invasive and surprisingly comfortable manner. It measures electrical activity of the brain, eye movement, muscle activity, heart rate, respiratory effort, airflow and blood oxygen levels. Trained clinical sleep technicians monitor your progress throughout the study. A PSG is used to confirm or rule out sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome and narcolepsy.
- Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a very effective treatment for sleep apnea. It is an overnight sleep test, which allows your physician to find out the best pressure that will be required for your CPAP machine that will be used to treat your sleep apnea. The level of pressure that may be beneficial must be determined in the sleep center. It is similar in many respects to the PSG above, but a mask will be fitted on your nose with air pressure to keep your windpipe open while you sleep.
Where is a Sleep Study performed?
- Polysomnography is performed in a private bedroom in the sleep center.
- The bedrooms are comfortably appointed with queen size beds, a TV and more to provide a familiar and relaxing home atmosphere.
- The results of your test are then sent for interpretation.
What do I need to bring with me to the Sleep Center?
- Overnight bag, as you would for an overnight stay at a hotel or a friend’s house
- Toiletries, such as soap, shaving cream, toothpaste, etc.
- Sleeping clothes such as loose fitting shorts and T-shirt or cotton or wool pajamas
- Your favorite pillow or blanket (blankets, pillows and linens are provided)
- Completed sleep history, co-pay notice (if received) and your medical insurance card
We request that you leave cellular phones, radios, clocks and beepers, etc., at home or in your car. If the technician determines that the use of any of these devices is interfering with the test in progress, he or she will ask you to discontinue its use. This is a medical procedure, the validity of which can be reduced by unnecessary distraction.
